Finite supplies of fossil fuels and raw materials, climate change issues and peak oil prices urge our society to start using renewable resources such as plant materials or agricultural waste for the production of chemicals, materials, products and fuels. By (re)using such green resources we move towards a biobased economy based on sustainable production processes.
Scale up
However, scaling novel production processes up from laboratory scale to a larger, industrial scale currently presents a major bottleneck. The need for complex equipment to investigate scale-up issues slows down scientific as well as commercial progress.
Expertise & technology center
Located in Delft, the Netherlands, the facility will be a center of expertise and technology open to researchers and students from all over the world. Both its scale and its open nature make it unique, and make the Netherlands a pioneer in the development of the biobased economy.

The Bioprocess Pilot Facility is funded by universities, companies, the European Union, the Dutch Ministries of Agriculture, Nature & Food Quality and Economic Affairs, the Province of South Holland and the Municipalities of Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague.
Delft pilot facility for innovations in sustainable bioprocesses
The Bioprocess Pilot Facility in Delft, The Netherlands, is a unique facility where companies and knowledge institutions can develop new sustainable production processes. These processes serve many purposes, such as converting biobased residues into useful materials or fuels. The facility has been specially designed to enable the transition from the laboratory to production on an industrial scale. It allows users to construct complex operations by linking separate process modules.
