Start of project PHERA
Bioprocess Pilot Facility is proud to be part of project PHERA, in which a European consortium of partners are going to commercialize insect pheromones for sustainable pest control.
The project is funded by the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) with SEDQ Healthy Crops (Spain), ISCA Europe (France), Russell IPM (UK), Novagrica (Greece), BioPhero (Denmark) and Fraunhofer (Germany) as BPF’s project partners.
Insect pheromones will be produced through new innovative fermentation processes that use renewable raw materials. With that the fermentative production has advantages above the pure chemical synthesis of the pheromone. Additionally, pheromone insect controls are safe, effective, affordable, and sustainable alternatives to toxic pesticides. Crops protected with pheromones have less chemical residue and the natural biodiversity of fields and orchards is preserved.
BPF will be focussing on the scale-up and development of the pheromone production and demonstrate pilot-scale fermentations and downstream processes in our versatile facility. The project fits very well in our role as open-access scale up and development partner that contributes to a more sustainable world.
